Part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, Alcatraz Island is one of America's most popular tourist attractions. Known more for its infamous former prison residents than its lighthouse history, Alcatraz nevertheless has a lighthouse history that is rich indeed. Alcatraz became the home of California's first lighthouse in 1854, which was removed in 1909 to make way for a military prison. Alcatraz' second lighthouse would become California's second concrete lighthouse. Still maintained by the USCG, the lighthouse stands just a few yards away from the prison entrance and is not open to the public. Reservations to visit this architectural wonder can be made through the Blue & Gold Fleet and are strongly recommended. The San Francisco Bay Weather can quickly change, so be prepared for wind and cold, and be pleasantly surprised if you encounter beautiful weather. |
