The lighthouse at Cape Mendocino was relocated from its original home just southwest of Ferndale, to Shelter Cove in 1998. The tower had begun to deteriorate and inch its way down the hill. Thanks to the Cape Mendocino Lighthouse Preservation Society, the tower was restored, painted, and had new glass installed. The tower is now open to the public and on display in Mel Coombs Park, overlooking the ocean in Shelter Cove. Visitors coming from Garberville, Start out going Northwest on Redwood drive toward Alderpoint road, t urn left onto Briceland road/ Briceland Thorn road.  Continue forward and go onto Shelter Cove road.  Turn left onto upper Pacific drive, Turn right onto Machi road and follow to Mel Coombs Park.
