Part of the Golden Gate National Recreation AreaFort Point is located at the southern base of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. Open and accessible to the general public, Fort Point is home to the Fort Point Lighthouse. When originally built, the first Fort Point Lighthouse was only the second lighthouse to be built in California. The current tower is the third lighthouse to stand at Fort Point, (originally known as Battery Point). The original Cape Cod style structure was torn down even before the lens arrived, to make way for the new Fort. The second wooden structure was torn down to make way for an updated seawall in 1863. The current tower began its life in 1864.  The fort is a great historical structure to explore, but the tower itself is not open. When traveling there please check the Current Operating Hours and Seasons.
